Gramvousa and Balos

Gramvousa and Balos are located in northwestern Crete, in the prefecture of Chania, and are two of the most popular and impressive attractions of the island. They are about 56 kilometers from the city of Chania.

Gramvousa is a small uninhabited island, known for its Venetian castle that dominates its summit, as well as for a shipwreck located on its beach. The castle of Gramvousa was built in 1579 by the Venetians, while the wreck of the ship “Dimitrios P.” happened in 1968

The lagoon of Balos is an exotic beach with white sand and turquoise waters, which combines the wild beauty of the Cretan landscape with a tropical feel. The beach is shallow and ideal for families with small children.

The area is protected and included in the Natura 2000 network.

Elafonisi

Elafonisi is an enchanting island located at the southwestern end of Crete, in the regional unit of Chania. It is known for its exotic beauty, shallow, crystal-clear waters, and pink sand, created from crushed corals and shells.

Agioi Theodoroi

The islet of Agioi Theodoroi, also known as Thodorou, is located opposite the Agia Marina in Chania and is a small but important part of the history and biodiversity of Crete.

Natural environment:

The island is rocky, with an area of 697 acres.

On its south side, there is a large cave with an arched entrance.

The island is uninhabited and protected by the Natura 2000 program, as it is a refuge for the Cretan wild goat (kri-kri), a rare and protected species.

Important information:

Access to the island is prohibited, except on the day of the feast of Saints Theodore, when it is allowed to visit for religious reasons.

The island takes its name from the church of Agioi Theodoroi, of which only ruins survive today.

Historical facts:

Ancient name: In ancient times, the island was called “Akytos” or “Akoition”, which means unfit for habitation.

Venetians: In 1574, the Venetians built a fortress on the island, which they named Turluru, to protect the area from attacks.

Turks: In 1645, the Turks occupied the island, but in 1650 the Venetians recovered it. Finally, in 1699, the island came under the control of the Turks.

Thodorou are an important part of the history of Chania, and a unique ecosystem and it is very important to preserve its protection.

Menies

Menies or Diktynna Beach is located in Crete, 45 kilometers northwest of Chania, on the northeastern shores of the Rhodopes Cape and at the exit of the Fountas Gorge. It is a beautiful secluded beach with pebbles and clear blue waters.

Menies Beach is located on the site of ancient Diktynna. Diktynna was the most important sanctuary of the goddess Vritomartis, who is believed to be the goddess Artemis. Thousands of pilgrims visit the area from all over the island. Vritomartis was used during the Hellenistic and Roman times.
